Introduction

My handle for this tour is Toothless Crank. I like to take loooooooong bicycle rides. The last three summers I've cycled across the USA, coast to coast. I had originally planned to pedal the ACA Great Divide route last summer, but COVID prevented it. The Canadian border is still closed which further postpones that tour. This summer I'll be hopping on a plane and beginning pedaling at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains. I'll start at an elevation of 4,692' and will climb to 11,312' on my third day. The weather has finally turned nice here in Brooklyn, but in the high Rockies it's currently in the 30's. I still haven't finished editing my spring Southern Tier report, and yet here I go again. Blanka the dog is staying behind in Brooklyn, and I'll be traveling solo. Route 50 through these parts is known as the the loneliest road in America. I'm looking forward to breaking new ground.

There was a pleasant nearby roaring stream, and it didn’t get too cold. Last night in town I had sat out on Main street in a Mexican restaurant stall and enjoyed beer, a margarita, and chips and guacamole. Afterwards I went to the packed bar at the New Sheridan Hotel, where I enjoyed two more beers. Telluride is a beautiful old town. It’s located at the end of a valley with towering walls that immediately rise up with a huge waterfall up against the cliffs in the distance. It was rather warm when I went to bed last night, but cold when I awoke in the morning. I heard trucks rambling down the highway all night long. My alarm was set for 5:30AM and I woke up at 5:20AM. I did a quick pack up and needed to get on the road as soon as possible. There was no condensation inside my tent and I was able to roll it up and stick it into my rear pack. I blew off the aloe and chamois butter regimen. I was now at level three.
